First layers of joy

Few more efforts of scratching the easy coming old color off and then we put the first brush strokes - color of the sky.

Scratch, dig and trow away

07.11.16
Today we, now 4 volunteers from 3 different countries (Latvia, Hungary, Sweden), started to renovate the building which used to be Youth Club. Hope it will carry out this function and will be opened again in future.

Oh, I forgot to mention the little work hands of most diligent volunteers. :)

Working in permaculture garden (day 5)

03.10.16
On the third compost turning time we add any extra water. Maybe that's why the cube came out not so firm. According to weather forecast the following days could be rainy, therefore it will get wet anyways.

Working in permaculture garden (day 4)

30.09.16
Despite the improper form, which was made first time we turned the pile, the odor was still quite okay. However we learned from mistakes and the second time we turned the compost pile we managed to make it higher.

After that we sneaked into other permaculture gardens. There we saw different kinds of irrigation structures, frogs, ducks and pigs, unusual ways of reproducing trees and plants, which attract necessary insects and whose leaves and flowers are edible.

Working in permaculture garden (day 3)

26.09.16
After few days we turned the compost pile. It was noticeably smaller, than we made it. The warming inside the pile caused shrinking. Also it was possible to feel the warmth with just putting hand above the compost. As we turned it, the warm steam came out of it.
Like Tatyana said, the hot compost was success, because there was no bad odor coming out of it. Hopefully it will continue like that.
As we turned the compost mass Tatyana added some water just to keep it moisten. Also the taping is no less important.
Well, the one thing that wasn't success was the proportion pile. We made it too small in height, so the pile will not 'breath' well enough.
Anyways, it's not huge disaster considering the next pile turning time will be after few days...

First walk through Shipkas eco-trail

Shipkas eco-trail unfortunately doesn't start as it should. It begins with rocky road which was started to build due to cutting activities and their benefits. Thanks to Shipkas nature activists, the road building in in this place is banned now.
Also everywhere are fallen peaces of wood. It is not only because of this road, but also because of wrecking pine trees, which were planted about 100 years ago by one French man. Now the eco-trail is not only threatened by cutting (which is still not well organised and done properly), but also by natural vegetation change.

  chicken tractor
In some places permaculture garden indeed looks like a jungle. But after we cut off and collected all the dray straws and plants for compost, it looked much better.

When that was done it was lunch time and we made our first lasagna. Lasagna from straws, chicken and horse manure, green stuff (nettles, dandelion leaves and the leaves of Paulownia tree), dried lavanda, rottened apples, pears, and just a bit of wood shavings for taste.
